I am trying to do a lot of hiking in the northern states of Malaysia. So we did 3 hikes in 3 days in Perlis as well as in Kedah. And Arau is the border town between these two states. We rented a car to take us to the different places in Perlis and Kedah so it was really easy to get around these places with the help of Waze. There are a few recommended and viral eating places and we got to sample some of this in the short time that we were there. I love the time I spent there as it did not coincide with any public or school holidays when the place will be jam packed with tourists.

Arau has many interesting place depends on your target.
Arau has many interesting place depends on your target. If you more into arts, food and view then Arau is the best. May favorite place always start from Padang Besar (PB) until Kuala Perlis.
I chose Api Api Ikan Bakar for mom and bro. I brought them on the next day to Taman Agrovet Perlis Padang Besar. For me just avoid Padang Besar if your target at Arau only. PB is far too north from Pengkalan Asam. Just buy a ticket and reach Arau. Arau is near to Jambatan Tuanku Syed Putra, Pekan Kuala Perlis if you are into community etc

Arau is just a small area.
Arau is just a small area. U could be anywhere u wanted in a short period of time. I think the time needed to go to Padang Besar and Bukit Kayu Hitam from Arau is just the same. Still under 40 minutes. Ate at several restaurants, their food for lunch is marvelous. Even though its not like Kuala Lumpur, there are cafes with concepts for the western cuisines.
